Every blessed day, thousands of people take their final breath and slip into eternity; either into heaven or into hell. Although we may never know their names, the reality of death happens every day. What happens the moment after a person dies? What happens the moment after you die depends on what happens before you die. The Bible classifies the whole human race into two broad categories – the saved and the lost. The saved are those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The lost are those who haven’t. After death, what happens to the saved is radically different from what happens to the lost. The saved will be carried by the angels of the Lord into the presence of Christ in heaven. Jesus said to the thief on the cross, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with me in Paradise” Luke 23:43. On two different occasions, Paul spoke of death as ushering us into the presence of Christ (Philippians 1:23, 2 Corinthians 5:8). On the contrary, if one has not been saved according to what the Word of God proclaims, they will not go to heaven. Sadly, they will go to hell (Luke 16:22-23, Revelation 20:11-15). People in Hell are tormented by extreme heat, smoke, fire, and worms (Luke 16:22-24, Mark 9:48-49, Isaiah 66:24, Matthew 25:46, Psalms 88:6, Jude 1:13, Luke 13:28).
